Slipware Bakeware:
Taking place over the weekend of 17th/18th October at Glasgow Ceramics Studio. This two-day course will focus on throwing and altering low wide forms on the potters wheel using terracotta clay to create kitchenware. On the first day we will be looking at making baking dishes using a two different techniques, manipulating the clay straight from the wheel to create rectangular, square and oval dishes.
Students will be learning about the use of slip in low-fired earthenware and practicing slip application techniques. On the second day students will learn how to work with wet-slip decoration, using slip trailers, marbling, feathering and other methods to make spontaneous gestures of decoration to the beautiful slipware pieces. This is an intermediate course for students who already have experience throwing on the wheel and would not be suitable for a complete beginner.
Finished pieces will be glazed in a clear glaze and ready for collection approximately 4 weeks after the end of the course. We will email you when they are ready.

Artist bio:
Frances is a slipware potter based in Manchester who loves to make pots that are joyful to use as part of everyday rituals to encourage a sense of comfort and warmth. Since graduating from Clay College, Frances has been exploring the possibilities of low-fired terracotta slipware, drawing decorative inspiration from the traditions of British slipware, to create contemporary tableware. She is a great admirer of Medieval pottery and hopes to create friendly forms in an expressive manner with generous curves, slipped surfaces and playful handles. She is fascinated with people’s relationships to material objects and loves to leave traces of the maker on her pieces to encourage a dialogue with the user.
She currently makes pots in her studio space at the Manchester Ceramics Collective and teaches a yearly throwing course at La Meridiana School of Ceramics in Tuscany.
